Grandma Pfaltzgraff's journal starting April 8, 1916

8 - We cleaned the kitchen.  in the evening I crocheted & Elda studied her S.S. lesson.

9 - We both went to church in the afternoon.  We went up there to practice for the Missionary programm.   I played "In the Sweet Bye & Bye."

10 - Fred came home early he got here at about nine oclock & we all three went to work & cleaned the bedroom & library & parlor.  There was election at the school house so Fred got one of the men to come down & help me move the base burner.

11 - Fred & I washed clothes Elda went home last night & I forgot to say Hazel was a year old & we burned one candle at the supper table.  We had a very big wash & were done at noon.

12 - I ironed quite a little Fred worked at the typewriter all forenoon.

13 - I finished ironing this forenoon & this afternoon we made a little early garden some onion sets & some peas & radishes & lettuce (&) spinach.  In the evening we went to Bible Study and The choir practiced after it.

14 & 15 - During one of these days we put out sweet peas and cosmos  Both days were spent at home  One day we went to Grant

16 - We went to church.  in the forenoon & in the afternoon We studied In the evening  I gave a talk to the Y.P.A. on "Good Prayermeetings & How to have them always."

17 - We went to Atlantic today.  I got my spring hat & some new glasses.  We called at F. Schulers in Atlantic but they were not at home.  (According to the 1910 census Fred and Mary Schuler lived in Atlantic, Cass, Iowa, US but by the 1920 census Fred was a widower.  Mary presumably died after April 16, 1916 and the 1920 census.)

18 - The members met at the church & gave it a good cleaning.

19 - Today we called at E & Wm Pilzer (A William Pelzer is listed in the 1910 census but no one else in the family has a name that begins with "E."  It could be that his wife, Nora, went by her middle name but the census does not give her middle name or initial.) & Chas & Grandma Sundermans (There are two Sundermans listed on the same page of the 1910 census.   One is clearly Charles Sunderman and the other may be Grandpa and Grandma Sunderman.)  It rained very had while we were at Wm Pilzers so we came home after the rain.

20 - I rained mostly all day today.  We could not have any Bible Study this evening.

21 - We went to Wm Eppelsheimers (listed in 1910 census as living in "Noble, Cass, Iowa") this morning & go stuck in the mud & Henry Martens (There are several Henry Martens living in Iowa in 1910 census however there is only one who lives in Cass County, Iowa) & Geo. Rose (There are several George Roses in the 1910 Census so it is difficult to determine which one is the right one.) came along & helped us out  when we got to E's Laura & Mrs & I made some Easter Lillies for Easter Sunday.  Laura came along (Laura is listed as one of the Eppleshemers children according to the 1910 Census)

22 - Laura & I finished the Lillies & decorated the church with them & some green & white crepe Paper.

23 - We all went to church.  The choir gave a special song.  In the afternoon Fred & I & Baby all took a nap & slept until nearly church time  Laura E. went home this morning.

24 - We washing clothes 7 got done by noon 7 then went to Doches for dinner & in the afternoon we went over to Laemisches to arrange for the W. M. S. meeting & then we went to A. Kuesters to get some potatoes for planting.

Grandma Pfaltzgraff's Journal starting March 22, 1916

22 When we were near Grant the car made an awful noise & we thot (thought) something was wrong with one wheel.  So he took the car to the Grant Garage today to have it fixed.  But it was alright.  So we took a little ride & then came home.

23 We went to Wm. Eppelsheimers for dinner.  She was just baking bread and kuchen & so she gave us some.  Then she gave us some onion sets & some soap & we went calling.  We wen to A. Martins.  They were not home.  Mr. was out in the field & when we went by he fell off of the disk & then we when to Geo. Bicking's & from there to Hy Bick's.  Baby wore shoes for the first time.  Had been wearing moccasins.  Then it started to rain & we came home.  We thot (thought) it might rain tomorrow to (too) so we went to Lyman & got some oil to clean our clothing with.

24 Fred did up the Fri. Wash & then we got ready to go calling.  Rauleigh Man came & we bought some Vanilla Extract & Cinammon.  We stopped at H.C. Schuler's to get an obituary he wrote in Germany of Amelia Bourch.  Then we went to call on Mrs. P. Rost.  She gave us a dollar for Baby.  That makes $5 that Baby has.  One from Mother Miller & one from Mother Weaver & one from Grandpa G. (Gruber?) & one from Grandma G. (Gruber) 7 then we went to Duff's & Bourch's. Ed & Mrs. had gone to Cumberland.  But Mr. was home.  We called at Nichol's & C. Wasmer's & G.P. Schuler's & then at Walter Eppelsheimer's & Herman Rothe's & Dolch's

25 Fred  helped me do up the Sat. work & then we dry cleaned 2 of his suits & 2 coats & 2 hats & 2 of my skirts & 2 of baby's hoods & a jacket & jabot & Necktie & I started to clean my plume with gasoline and flour but it got to dark for me so I quit.

26 Fred & baby & I went to church.  In the afternoon we went to H.C. Schulers to call.  In the evening we went to church.  When Fred was making his announcements he said 15 for 15 minutes till &  27 of Nov. for 27 of Mar. & he made an announcement about school commencing 7 he said parents twice where he should have said children.  Before we went to church Mrs. Eppelsheimer came in here & asked if Laura could board her while she taught school until they got another teacher.  Of course I had to.

27 Fred & I washed clothes.  We got a late start but we were all thru (through) & had everything clearned up when school was out.

28 I ironed some clothes & Fred went calling.

28 I finished ironing & Fred went calling.

29 I finished ironing & Fred went calling & in the evening he went to Bible Study.  I was to (too) tired so I did not go.

30 I finished cleaning my plume & cleaned one of Hazel's jackets.  Wehn Fred came home from claling he took me for a ride. We went as far as Rudig and back.  In the evening Fred went to he School House to a lecture.  Laura & I stayed home.  I curled my plume.  Baby was very good all day long

April


1 Fred did up my work & then we went to Grant.  In the evening we did some pressing.

2 we all went to church.  In the afternoon we made out some of Fred's Reparts for conference & then in the evening we went to church again.  Baby was so tired I had to take her out in the hall.  After  we went home from church we packed his suitcase and then retired.

3 We got up about five o'clock.  I baked a pie & got Fred's lunch ready & some breakfast & then  at six he left with the car which he left in Griswold.  He went to Dumont for a couple of days.  I did up the dishes & wrote some letters & then Elda Weaver came and raked the yard.

4 Elda & I finished raking the yard & cleaned the attic.

5 I wrote a letter while Elda ate Breakfast & then I gave baby a bath.  We cleaned the dressing room & spare bedroom upstairs.  I learned to crochet a pattern that Elda was crocheting.

6 We cleaned the other spare bedroom & the hall.  Mrs. & Laura Knoke called here & went to prayer meeting.

7 We cleaned the pantry & wash room.
